Should you fill in all the boxes?

In NSW we have Optional Preferential Voting which differs from how we vote in the Legislative Assembly at the Federal Election. Unlike at the Federal election you do not have to preference however if you want to keep your vote "alive" through all the rounds of the count it is best to number all the boxes. If your first choice is eliminated during one of the counts your vote will go to your second choice, if that choice is eliminated your vote will go to your third choice and so on. If you do not list your preferences and your first choice is eliminated your vote will expire and not be counted in the final round - this scenario tends to favour the incumbent.

In a democracy I feel that it is essential that people's preferences are heard as to who ultimately represents them. This is particularly important if you decide to vote 1 for someone other than myself or the current incumbent. If you can't give me your number 1 please consider giving me your number 2!

I have not suggested how to preference on my How to Vote card because I am an independent and its important to me that I guarantee my independence. Recommending one party over another would compromise that. Your preferences are your own but I highly recommend that you put a 1 next to my name and then fill in all the boxes in the order of your choice.

In the upper house please consider voting for candidates who reflect my policies and our communities values.
